March/April Newsletter

Garage Sale for Haiti

Our garage sale was a success.  The class raised $271 in sales which will go towards paying for one student’s enrolment and meals at Wings Over Haiti.

School Musical

The school’s musical this year is Mary Poppins.  A number of students in our class have been practicing to sing in the musical’s chorus each week. There are two performances scheduled on the evenings of May 9th and 10th at 7:00pm. The costs of tickets will be announced in a future Riverside Ramblings newsletter with all proceeds going towards next year’s musical production.  We hope to see you there.

Time

Last week we started learning about time.  We will be making our own paper plate clocks to practice telling time.  The class will be learning how to read the hour hand first.   They will be taught that the hour does not change until the hand has passed the number on the clock.  Once they are proficient at reading the hour hand we will add the minute hand to the clock and focus on telling time to the hour and half hour.  Please feel free to practice telling time at home.

Hockey Game

Please sign and return the forms for the Staff/Student Hockey game at the Summit Centre on Friday March 30th from 1:30-2:30pm.  The office would like these forms returned by this Wednesday.

Riverside Gets Olympic

In preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, our school has chosen an Olympic theme for the rest of this year.  Our class country is Chad.  We will be learning a bit about the country and presenting the flag at the next school assembly.  The student leadership has been planning a number of special days and activities to go with the Olympic theme.

Easter

Please send 4 boiled eggs in a closed container on April 5th.  We will be decorating the eggs in class as a fun craft for the day.

Yard Sale Fundraiser for Wings Over Haiti

On the 1st of March, our class will be participating in a Yard sale Fundraiser for Wings over Haiti. Please send yard sale items for kids such as books, toys, dress-up items, household items, etc. We have decided not to sell clothing at this sale. We will be doing this with three other classes and hope our students will have a good experience helping others and learning about money. Items for the sale may be brought in starting February 27th. All proceeds from the sale will go to Wings Over Haiti. Any unsold items may be picked up on Thursday or Friday after the sale. On the weekend these items will be donated to charity.

Here is a fun math tool to explore diferent kinds of two dimensional shapes.  We are doing lessons to see how many different squares and triangles we can make on a 5×5 geoboard.  Make sure to switch the geoboard to a 5×5 square grid by clicking the dotted circle button beside the letter A.
